I wonder if the locals truly appreciate the beauty that surrounds
them. Starting centuries ago, they have built into this rocky coast
dotted with greenery. It's soothing to the soul, this gazing out to
where the blues of sky and sea meet.
Positano is a village on the Amalfi Coast where white houses with low roofs slope down to a colorful fishing port. It was described as a "dream place" by John Steinbeck. We agree. We walked down the narrow, winding lane to the sea and were rewarded with the scene below which Jud captured and remains our favorite picture of the area. A blissful hour can be spent at a shaded table enjoying the simple fare of homemade wine and crisp bread topped with fresh tomato and a drizzle of olive oil.
We
ferried across the mainland to the Isle of Capri in the Bay of
Naples. In Anacapri, built on a high plateau, there are dizzying
panoramic views down sheer cliffs into the turquoise Tyrrhenian sea.
Emerging below are very deep and jagged caves. Unfortunately, the day
we were to visit the famous "Blue Grotto" the water was too choppy for
the tiny rowboats needed to fit thru the narrow openings. Instead, we
took in the vistas from the heights of the lush Gardens of Augustine. We
shopped the glamorous boutiques, then sampled limoncello and espresso,
while enjoying the warm breezes off the sea.
